Maestro Lecture: The Truth About Your Foundation Shade

“Makeup is Art. Beauty is spirit.”

Truth is… your #foundation shade is actually 2-3 shades in one—considering your undertones. Knowing them are crucial in attaining your perfect match.

Undertones: Warm, Cool and Neutral

Warm: peach, yellow and golden

Cool: pink, bluish hues

Neutral: about the same color as skin tone

Yet, matching the color of your foundation shouldn’t be the only factor in your decision making when it comes to picking out the product that best suits your skins needs.

Matching consists of these factors:

  • Undertones

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Any skin conditions that you may have/inherited

Your foundation should to adhere to these needs and keep these questions in mind when choosing the best option:

Finishes: Satin, Matte, Dewy/Luminous

Coverages: Sheer/Light, Light to Medium, Medium to Full

What is the quality of the product? Does it hold well throughout the day or does the product begin to pill and/or separate?

Is there a skincare formula mixed in with the foundation?

Does the foundation oxidize?

Does your skin have texture? If so, how severe is it? This is especially important as having texture on the skin, makes some parts of application on the face uneven. The surface is already uneven so be mindful of using thicker coverage products, since applying one would make the surface more uneven.

I often get asked if people should apply concealer or foundation first…

First and foremost, foundation comes first unless you are in need of Color Correcting (then CC would come first). That’s why it’s called “foundation”… so you can set your base and then see if you need to add any extra concealer in specific spots. Most times, your foundation takes care of the appearance of blemishes. There you have it.
