Figuring out what worked for me, how to blend contours, and eyeshadows that would compliment my facial features took months, years and lots of experimentation. While it was fun and all, it became frustrating not being able to simply know how to do my makeup. I saw makeup on the ‘Gram that looked so flawless, I was determined to teach myself how to get there.

Here’s the best Makeup Artistry advice for those learning how to do their own or others makeup:

  1. Color Theory (See Our Color Theory Post) - Examine which colors are complimentary to each other as they will be important for Color-Correcting, determining which cool and/or warm tones work for each skin tone and texture.

  2. Learn Facial Structures (All Face Shapes) - Makeup is extremely versatile and multi-dimensional as we are our own Canvas! Here’s a Cheat Sheet:

    • Round

    • Square

    • Oval

    • Diamond

    • Heart

    • Rectangle

    • Triangle

    • Oblong

  3. Eye & Eyebrow Shapes - This is probably the most technical part of the process, but once you have this down it really pulls the entire look together. Cheat Sheet:

    • Almond

    • Round

    • Upturned & Downturned

    • Close Set & Wide Set

    • Hooded

    • Monolid

    Eyebrows

    • Straight

    • Soft Arch

    • High Arch

    • Curved

    • “S” Shaped

    • Upward

  4. Lip Shape - SO important because with the spiked interest in lip enhancers, lip liner contouring is vital. Here’s a Lip Contouring Pictorial (not ours!).
